Would you like to take a survey? Waterborn babes...

Please help me out. This is a very informal collection of information. I do not stand to profit in any financial manner, but I am learning how to collect and assemble information, so I stand to gain knowledge and skill (hopefully).

I'm looking for the numbers on waterborn babes, so please reply if your baby was born in water.

1) Location of birth (hospital, home, Pacific ocean, etc)

2) Type of pool (single use inflatable, jacuzzi, rented, normal bathtub, Pacific ocean, etc)

3) Type of attendant (OB, MW, Considerate Dolphin, etc)

4) Please note *any* prenatal complications.

5) How many babies have you had, and which one was this?

6) Did your attendant (or staff) ever express concern over your baby's heartrate during labor?

7) Did your attendant ever diagnose your baby with distress in labor?

8) How long was your active labor (4+ cm dilation, contractions < 5min apart)?

9) When did your membranes rupture?

10) What was the condition of the amniotic fluid(blood, meconium, etc)?

11) Did your baby cry immediately after birth?

12) Was your attendant (or yourself) concerned about his/her condition, and why? Do you know your baby's APGAR scores, if taken?

13) Was your baby transferred (or taken) for intensive care? Why?

14) Did anything striking or unusual happen (like a snapped umbilical cord or precipitous delivery)?

15) How long was your pregnancy?

16) Where you induced, and how?

17) Were you augmented with Pitocin?

18) Date of birth(s).

19) What else do you think I should know?

Thank you so much for your time, and please pass the word! ^_^

  1. I'm assuming you want responses in the comments so here goes:

    1) Location of birth (hospital, home, Pacific ocean, etc)
    Home

    2) Type of pool (single use inflatable, jacuzzi, rented, normal bathtub, Pacific ocean, etc)
Rented (Aquadoula)-included in my midwife's fee-for the birth. Labored a good long part of the day in our backyard hot tub.

    3) Type of attendant (OB, MW, Considerate Dolphin, etc)
Planned with midwife (who arrived 10 minutes after the birth); actual attendant was my doula

    4) Please note *any* prenatal complications.
Breech at 8 months. Turned after 5 days of chiropractic treatment (Webster's)

    5) How many babies have you had, and which one was this?
That was my second baby. First was hospital. 3rd pregnancy ended in miscarriage. Due 7/2, planning another homebirth.

    6) Did your attendant (or staff) ever express concern over your baby's heartrate during labor?
    No.

    7) Did your attendant ever diagnose your baby with distress in labor?
    No.

    8) How long was your active labor (4+ cm dilation, contractions > 5min apart)?
    Umm.....12 hours?

    9) When did your membranes rupture?
20 minutes or so before the birth, on dry land, after a change in position.

    10) What was the condition of the amniotic fluid(blood, meconium, etc)?
    Clear and normal.

    11) Did your baby cry immediately after birth?
No. Or at all. She was breathing but completely calm.

    12) Was your attendant (or yourself) concerned about his/her condition, and why? Do you know your baby's APGAR scores, if taken?
My doula thought the baby might have inhaled some water and needed suctioning so we used the booger sucker a couple of times. We don't have Apgar scores due to the midwife not being there (and don't really care).

    13) Was your baby transferred (or taken) for intensive care? Why?
    No.

    14) Did anything striking or unusual happen (like a snapped umbilical cord or precipitous delivery)?
Long slow labor, water broke, break in contractions for about 15 minutes, then she was born in 3 contractions (only pushed for two and was really holding back). So....no? Yes? I don't know. :)

    15) How long was your pregnancy?
She came on her due date.

    16) Where you induced, and how?
    No.

    17) Were you augmented with Pitocin?
    No.

    18) Date of birth(s).
    12-14-06

    19) What else do you think I should know?
Do you plan to publicize the results of this survey? I think you should! Also, I think Surveymonkey is free. :) Also, this is the closest I have come to writing her birth story, so thanks. :)

  7. 1. Location of birth - home
    2. Type of pool - home birth inflatable pool with lid
    3. Type of attendant - midwife
    4. No prenatal issues
    5. 2/2
    6. No concern over heartrate was raised during labour
7 baby wasn't diagnosed with distress during labour.
    8. Active labour for 2 hours, contractions for 3 days on and off
    9. membranes did not rupture, baby was born in the cull, midwives ruptured membranes after baby was born
    10. Amniotic fluid was clear
    11. Baby never cried in the pool except when he felt the cold for the first time
    12. No concerns for baby's health
    13. No intensive care required
    14. No striking details
    15. 40 week term
    16. No induction
    17. No pitocin
    18. 12/28/2010
    19. No vaginal tearing however I had previous hernia abdominal surgery and the pressure of an over 10 pound baby plus the amniotic membranes, 2 pounds, caused serious internal pelvic prolapse and difficulty with toileting. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend anyone do it with prior abdominal adhesions from surgery to avoid possible trauma. Breast feeding was a breeze.
